HELP Review

Attending to the visitors at HELP is a lovely and exciting job to do. We receive many people here who come looking for solutions to their health problems.

Three months back a young gentleman in his late 20s named Sunil visited HELP just to know what this place was about. Sunil came to my desk and said; “I have a problem, my younger brother who completed his graduation four years back does not remember anything about his educational knowledge that he had acquired in past. He does not even remember of what course or degree he had taken up as his career. I am very concerned for him and we have been consulting Doctors as well in order to cure him but along with the medical treatment I also want to that in what other ways I and my family can help him to overcome this situation.”

Sunil looked quite tensed and worried. But he had come to the right place. At HELP, we have all the possible information available on health its problems. We have books and other reference materials specially for educating patients about their health issues and also various information of how to overcome them. As I said earlier Sunil had come to the right place, he was able to know many aspects of what his brother was going through and how he can help him to cope with his problem.

According to Sunil; “HELP is a real good service to society.”

Testimonials for HR Shenoy

From the email Testimonials from my colleagues in L&T when I retired in April 2000

From: Aravindakshan (a Tamilian whom I always addressed affectionately as ‘Periyavar’ – here he reciprocates that)

You will always be Periyavar in my life and memory, a hero to be looked up and to follow.

From: Paromita (whom I had the privilege of being a ‘father’ figure in the hour of her need)

I have learnt to take all things positively be it failure or success. I owe this to you. Thank you for this.

From Pervez Purkar (whom I had helped to get a transfer to my department – he deserved it of course; no favour done)

Dear Mr Shenoy:

I have known you as a man of principles and I continue to carry the image with me. I have lot of respect for you.

I would never forget your words “Are you willing to learn?”

From Suresh Todkar (an unassuming colleague with whom I had the privilege of conducting TQM Awareness programmes)

You are always a source of inspiration for me. I can never forget the moral support and confidence you gave me throughout my TQM journey.

It was great being together for 27 years and I hope it continues outside these four walls of L&T.

From RK Gupta

You had been master and resource of learning for youngsters.

You have a personality worth imbibing and praise.

The zeal you have to serve the society now by Reiki is just great.

In my opinion, individuals like you are rare in this world.

From Omkar Rao (one of the participants in the TQM Awareness program conducted by my Team)

I can still remember the way you had helped a colleague of ours – one Mr Gajendra – who went down with cold.

You impressed me as a person who was in control of himself and who had found a lot of peace within himself.

From HK Verma (one of my colleagues)

I shall always cherish the long association with you and the amount of knowledge and timely help you gave me from time to time. I had the opportunity to learn from you on several occasions.

You are taking with you the vast knowledge bank and I am sure you will continue to use and guide many more in the years to come.

A word about my training skills

For the last 10 years of my working life, though I was working as an IT professional, I conducted many training programs in subjects like Joy of Working, Total Quality Management etc.
After retirement in 2000, apart from these programs, I conducted programs in Reiki, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Once I was conducting a training program for a 30 year old woman and a college student. The student's mother was an observer. At some stage, she said, “You are not a bad teacher.” A stunned me asked her “Why did you say that?”. She said “This woman is not practicing what you taught her. I thought you are a poor teacher.
I also conducted the program once alone for a group of social workers and trade union leaders, thanks to my young friend Vidyadhar, a student of MSW at that time. It was a full day session, the last minute instruction being to do it predominantly in Hindi.
The organizer (I do not remember his name), who sat through the 7 hour session, said “I have always heard of TQM in the context of cost, profit, inventory, etc and no mention about the people. And for the whole day, I have heard Shenoy talking of only people, people and people. Yes. It is we who make the difference.”
And this program had started with a stunning question from a middle aged trade union leader about an hour after the start: “Isn't TQM for the benefit of the management?”.
After a bit of pause, I said “Yes. I am, however, writing this question on the board. Let us also try to find an answer at the end of the program.”
The most heartening summation even before the Programme ended came from a participant “TQM is for our benefit.” He was a trade union leader too. I was fairly embarrassed by this person's eulogy as he continued his praise for some minutes – he must have been around 70, a father figure.
I am not a bad teacher after all.

Reiki is a Japanese word. Re = ‘Universal’. Ki = ‘Life Force Energy’ (pranashakti as we know in Yoga). It is also known as ‘Usui System of Natural Healing’, named after Dr Mikao Usui, the Japanese who rediscovered this ancient healing system, rooted in Budhism and formulated his own practice.

This book is very interesting from both the teaser's point of view, and the tease’s point of view. The book also has some interesting relationship advice in the form of flirting to get a date, and flirting to maintain or save a relationship. Flirting equals teasing. Microalbuminuria - A Patient's Story

Today HELP Library had the privilege of meeting one of its newest patrons. Mr.Shirish Awadhani, a retired Biology teacher from Pune’s popular Wadia College. Mr.Awadhani stumbled up HELP one of his frequent trips from Pune to Mumbai and decided to check us out. He was amazed to find the quality of our collection of books. He said that he has come across several libraries around the globe, but this collection and the ‘international quality of service’ just stumped him.
But this is not what I intend to blog about. Its about Mr.Awadhani himself.

Mr.Awadhani suffers from Microalbuminuria – secondary complication affecting those suffering from Diabetes over a prolonged period of time. It is a ‘complication or a disease affecting the kidneys’ he said. On interacting further with him it was obvious that he is a man of grit.

Mr.Awadhani says that he has found a way – mainly through lifestyle changes and a change in one’s attitude and more importantly through Information therapy to accept and cope with his disease. According to him, being better informed about one’s disease – even life threatening ones gives helps one to extend his/her life by year or two ! It means a lot to patients and their families who are on the verge of giving up hope completely. He says that recovery depends a lot on good consultation and counseling you get from your doctor. Any disease is a product of our habits eg. Contracting diabetes depends not only on our genes, but, in present times largely on our habits and lifestyle. Mr.Awadhani wants to help the general public by sharing his views and thoughts and by starting a support group for diabetics. You are most welcome Mr.Awadhani.

We now look forward to interacting with Mr.Shirish Awadhani at HELP when he will talk on “A Patient’s Story – How to Manage Diabetes and Keep Secondary Complications Away” on 8th January, 2009.

HELP Review

According to our regular readers at HELP, this place is the best pass time they could have ever had. At HELP many of our readers and visitor are retired and fall under elderly group. In this age people wants to relax at home, live a happy and quiet life away from the world was my perception for the older groups but now after looking at these readers most of them in their late 50s are so enthusiastic and keen in keeping themselves fit and healthy. They want to live every seconds of life gaining as much gyaan as possible. They are full of life and energy and not as today’s younger generation – lazy and least concerned about their health.

One could learn many things from these elderly chaps as they are more experienced and knowledgeable as compared to the young adults. According to one such elderly reader at HELP, ‘This library helped me deal with whatever minor ailments I was going through and was able to understand them and also what is to be done in order to get rid of them in a better and cheaper way. This was only possible because of the information I was able to acquire from this heavenly place where I found lots of material on patient’s education.’

Here at HELP, we have books for the all the age groups. The books are divided into various sections like Family Health, Nutrition and Diet, Fitness and Sports Medicine, Alternative medicines and Complimentary Therapies, Mental Health, Men’s Health and Women’s Health, Children’s Health, Parenting, and many more. Don’t you feel like giving a visit at this prosperous place which is called HELP-Health Education Library for People? So see you soon here at HELP…Don’t forget I’ll be waiting to receive you all.

HELP Review

Need HELP for your Science / Medical projects?

At HELP we have books on all the possible ailments, diseases and psychological problems which would prove to be very helpful for gathering information on the subjects you are researching on.

At HELP, many students visit who are also from the medical field. They visit this library for gathering information for their projects on which they are working on. Like, there were these two young students Farhan and Samina from Swami Vivekananda College, Chembur. They were students of BSc. and had been given a project on Alzheimer’s disease and Schizophrenia on which they were asked to gather all the possible information they could gather for these projects.

Both the students seemed to be committed towards the project. They used to come to the library at around 11am and leave by around 3:30pm – 4:00pm and this continued for about 8-10 days. On the last day of their visit at HELP Farhan and Samina came up to us and said; “This place is very calm to come and refer books here on the lovely collection of books that has been put up especially mental health. This library was of great help to us in order to complete the projects in such a short span of time as all the required information was available under one roof. Keep up the good work.” Farhan also said while leaving that is not his last visit at HELP but from now onwards he will be coming here often.

Dutiful Daughters - Book Review

This unusual book of first-person essays by women writers is timely and engaging. Appearing just as policymakers reassess Medicare and Social Security, it documents the private side of aging and caregiving. Each of the 22 stories told here is different: some contributors tell of how caring for their aging parents deepened their relationships or afforded opportunities for late-life forgiveness; others explore loss and sorrow. As a result, this is a wonderfully varied exploration of the complicated emotional and spiritual issues that emerge for both parents and daughters as their bodies and relationships age.
