Seek Information Therapy on your Medical Condition
Information Therapy is the prescription of the right information, to the right person, at the right time to help make a better health decision. It will help you make better decisions regarding your health and get the right treatment.
Ask your doctor for an Information Prescription
As a patient you want detailed information regarding your ailments and many of you feel that your doctors are unable to devote enough time explaining your problems – in such a scenario insist on an information prescription and seek out that information from reliable sources such as a health education library or ask your doctor if he has relevant information available on his/her website.
Join a support group
As a patient you would like to join a support group each other, to help yourself to cope with illnesses suffered by you or your near and dear ones and to seek advice from others who have similar ailments. You could seek information about existing support groups offline as well as online.
Ask questions about your medicines
As a patient, it is your right to ask as many questions as you wish to clear any doubts. Read what your doctor has written; ask your doctor or chemist for an explanation of any confusing terms on your prescription. Your doctor can also help you save money by prescribing generic drugs. Remember that you are the one taking your medicines. Therefore, ensure that you are well informed about them, so that you can take them safely.
Use Technology to get better medical care
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), electronic health records, laboratory data and patient health records provides an option to your doctor to access your laboratory data; provides you with the option to switch doctors easily or allow your doctor to refer you to other doctors for a second opinion.
Seek out Information Therapy from a Medical Librarian
Medical librarians ensure that the information that a patient seeks will be sourced from authentic and reliable sources. You will find it easier to ask questions that you may forget ask your doctor. Instead of wasting time wading through information on the Internet using a library’s resources – print and electronic and a librarian’s help can make a world of difference to you.
