Announcement Hepatitis B and C are now more easily treatable as all the treatment options are available in our country. Even for those who have progressed to liver cancer there are newer modalities of treatment available for patients who are not candidates for surgical resection. However early detection remains a challenge. Hepatitis C virus testing in the blood banks became mandatory in India only after June 2001. All patients who have received blood transfusions before 2001 should be tested for anti HCV especially if they have elevated SGOT/SGPT. New drugs for both Hepatitis C and liver cancer are undergoing clinical trials for either those who have not been treated or those who have not responded to standard treatment such patients can be enrolled in these trials if suitable.
